If I were to want to get my first motorcycle, does anyone have any suggestions about a bike that won't kill a new guy??

Really? Ya know I'm going to have to get one too so you can follow someone home in the dark.

I know at least drick, my69pickup, albatros_3 and myself ride motorcycles. Do you have a general idea of the type of bike you want?

I have to say, I'm having a hard time picturing you on anything but a:

Of all the imaginative ways to kill oneself on a bike, few (imho) have anything to do with what you are riding. That being said, most Harleys and cruisers in general don't have the violent power delivery that you find in larger sportbikes or low-geared off-roaders. On the other hand, the cruisers are often less nimble, favoring comfort and laid-back style over handling and brakes.

What do you think about drick's bike (Yamaha V-star 250)?

Granted, it's not a Harley, but it's a brilliant looking cruiser, reliable and comparatively cheap. They have it with larger engines too (250cc may be a little on the weak side with a passenger).

It really doesn't matter what bike you get to start out with. You control the throttle and the maneuvering of the bike. The bike is only going to go as fast as you make it. Don't get stupid with whatever you buy and you will be fine as far as with what is in YOUR control. The stupidity and negligence of other drivers..... now that's what kills bikers.

I started out on a Kawasaki ZX6R (600cc) sport bike and now ride an R1 (1000cc). Both bikes are fast, sexy, and fun! I would highly recommend that whatever you buy to take a motorcycle safety course (avg. $250 - $350) as it will teach you the fundamental skills of controlling your ride. Most Basic Rider Safety Courses also provide a motorcycle (250cc) for you so that you can take the class before buying your own. Also, don't cheap out on decent safety gear.

Bottom line in my opinion, Buy what you want as you're the one paying for it, just ride safe and always watch for others.

backroom

Yamaha Vstar 250
Honda Rebel 250

Scooter style but faster
Suzuki Burgman 400 or 650

Harleys are heavy and top heavy... even the Sportsters.
Smallest HD is the 883 Sportster. Used... still a $5k ride and unless you have a handle on riding basics the weight and center of gravity are cumbersome.
The Jap cruisers are lighter, handle better and are more reliable.
I recommend something smaller (engine size) as a first time rider.
I also recommend taking the MSF safety course.

Go out and sit on a couple different bikes. The best bike for you is the one that feels best under your ass. I do not know how tall you are but you should be able to put both feet flat on the ground while sitting in the saddle.

I am currently on an 83 Honda Shadow 750.

Great machine but too much power... IMO... for a new rider. Much quicker and faster than modern cruisers with twice the engine.

Look around for used Shadow 500...1983 thru 86.
I think it would be a good match for you and should be had for about $1500.

definately on the MSF Course, will teach you the basics of riding and maneuvers, quick reactio maneuvers and so forth as well as help at the DMV. the course gives you the chance to take just the written portion of the test to get your license and not the riders portion, as well as not having to get your permit first...

yamaha vstar 1100 is my ride. daily commuter in and out of Washington dc for 7 years now.

vstars are great cause you can get them now in a variety of engine sizes. there is a 250, 650, 900, 1100, 1300(liquid cooled), 1900 and a V4 monster called the VMax, you dont want this one unless you have balls the size of Colorado. im glad i didnt get one smaller than the 1100 cause i would have been bored with it in 2 months or less specially on the HOV lanes heading into and out of work where we travel at speeds around **CENSORED**. but by all means try a few of them out. go to a dealer and find one that fits your leg length and arm reach and find one that fits you your style and what your needs are, if you dont you may end up with a bike you not comfortable on which sucks and you wont enjoy it. sit on all of them and dont miss one. plus nice thing is you dont have to buy there cause you will pay way to much at a dealer
your best bet is craigslist or ebay. i am a cracklist addict and i admit it. so there is my 23.5 cents worth

thanks, my desire is for pleasure riding, not necessity (no commuting or anything like that) I'm looking forward to going and sitting on the bikes and seeing what size is gonna fit me best. Thanks for the help
