In the ancient Olympics, no medals were awarded. The first-place winner was given an olive branch to wear on his head. The second and third place winners did not receive anything.

You're absolutely right. The winner was usually awarded an olive wreath.

Laurel, pine, celery, parsley, or palm may also have been used depending on what was available at the host venue.
