you know because of your reply i actually went to the effort of reading up on this. And yes if better crowd control measures had been in effect then maybe it would have been prevented. You could also say that if traffic hadn't backed up then the gathering of the crowd would have been more spaced out and less urgent, or that those if those with out tickets had stayed home the flow would have been better.

But the root cause is a bunch of assholes pushing on the people in front of them in an effort to make the line move.

I disagree.
I have been to nfl games, baseball games, disney, multiple theme parks, nhl games, lilith fair, a couple of other big fair concerts, multiple arena concerts, and never have I experienced people pushing on me trying to get to the front, all without any more crowd control than was present at this event. None with mounted horsemen. The closest would be when i was down in the standing area in front of a stage, and even that was not enough to actually move me.

perhaps this is a cultural thing that I simply cannot understand. I can't understand the mindset that would cause people to actually push the people in front of them.
