Am I mistaken, or is this the first time Superman has been depicted with facial hair?
On film, yes. Back during the Exile storyline in the 90's, he sported a beard just like Henry Cavill's. Also in the WB (Timmverse) Justice League when Superman met a future Vandal Savage.
