For the record, in my headline, the use of "Obama Camp" means more than just the actual Obama campaign. It also means Obama's surrogates, supporters, and, of course, the media. But you already knew that.
Before we get started, though, I want to back up some because this isn’t meant to only be a har-har top ten list that's fun to read and pass around. What I'm trying to do here is make a case for what I believe is the over-arching strategy of the Obama campaign and why I think, at least for now, it's working pretty well.

Admittedly, there are all kinds of people much smarter than I out there making the case that Team Obama's primary goal is to disqualify Mitt Romney by portraying him as a rich, venal, out-of-touch corporate raider determined to grab hold of presidential power in order to enslave the middle class. This, I think, is wrong. Those attacks are merely the tools the Obama campaign is using to attain a much bigger and more effective goal.

The real goal of the Obama campaign is to rob Romney of an aura of competence; to disqualify him in the minds of voters by making them believe Romney isn't up to the job of being president. After all, voters will ask themselves consciously and subconsciously, if you can't run a presidential campaign, how can you run the federal government and the military?

The tools by which the Obama campaign and the media are using to trip up Romney's campaign and to undermine his competence are, however, these relentless attacks on his wealth, Bain, and taxes. And it's just a fact that most of these attacks come in the form of audacious lies. But there's no question that the hurling of these outrageous lies automatically puts Romney and his campaign into a defensive crouch -- they look reactive, unable to get a message out, and therefore weak, unable to lead, and ineffective.

Obama's overall goal isn't to stereotype Romney as Scrooge McDuck, his overall goal is -- by any means he can -- to win the "Devil You Know" campaign. And if that's your goal, one way to accomplish it is to keep Romney and his team forever on defense and explaining and smothered in distractions that never allow them to come up for oxygen and talk about a message. And it doesn’t matter how dirty or dishonest what your hurling is -- all that matters is keeping your opponent off-balance so he looks foolish.

In a Daily Beast column today, Democrat operative Bob Shrum closes a lengthy piece about how Romney lost the summer with this observation:
Right now, Romney doesn’t just look like the uncaring and disconnected candidate from and for the privileged. At home as well as abroad, he seems to be yet another airhead son of a famous father. We’ve been there before. The battle of the summer is over—and Romney lost it.

I actually disagree with the part about Romney looking uncaring and disconnected. But the part about Romney looking like "yet another airhead son of a famous father" is revealing.

Essentially, what Obama knows is that American voters forgive dirty politics. What they don't forgive, however, is weakness and incompetence. What Obama knows is that the one complaining about dirty politics is never the one who ends up victorious on election day.

Given a choice between a competent liar and an "airhead,"  voters never choose the airhead.

With that in mind, here's the arsenal Romney's been hit with thus far:

1. Romney Killed My Wife -- This howler, courtesy of a pro-Obama super PAC, has sucked most of the oxygen out of yesterday and today's news narrative. In-between denouncing the ad, Romney's attempting to work through the clutter of this distraction to hit Obama for dismantling welfare reform.

2. Outsourcer-In-Chief -- This lie came courtesy of the Washington Post, who, in direct coordination with the Obama campaign, slammed Romney for outsourcing jobs he didn’t outsource.

3. Romney's Gaffe-tastic Overseas Escapades -- To make Romney look like a stumble-bum and destroy any hope he had of looking presidential or like a statesman, the corrupt media created gaffes out of whole cloth, going so far as to make Ugly American spectacles of themselves on sanctified ground. The Narrative was set and executed brilliantly.

4. Romney Will Crush the Middle Class With Tax Increases -- Both the media and Obama campaign have teamed up to use a phony study (co-authored by a former Obama official) to accuse Romney of planning to cut taxes for the wealthy and raise taxes on the middle class. Lies don’t get much bigger than this, but Romney's had to be out there defensively explaining why this isn’t true ever since.

5. Harry Reid's McCarthyism -- This sinister but undeniably brilliant tactic sucked up six-days of the news-cycle and was a total and complete victory for the Obama campaign. For six-days we talked about Romney's taxes and not about Obama's failures. Reid, who has no plans to run for reelection, took all the fire and Obama floated above it all.  Genius.

6. Romney's a Felon -- Both DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Senior Obama Campaign Advisor Stephanie Cutter used the word "felon" to describe Mitt Romney's association with Bain. This sucked the air out of three-days worth of news-cycles and while the media cried foul, they also made sure Obama paid no political price whatsoever. Moreover, Romney was reduced to a man demanding an apology. Another total win for Team Obama.

7. Romney Opposes Abortion Exceptions For Rape and incest Victims -- This ad comes straight from the Obama campaign, not a surrogate. It's another brazen, bald-faced lie that makes Romney look extreme and that the media has made sure Obama pays no political price for telling.

8. Romney the Gay-bashing Prep School As*hole -- In another blatantly false anti-Romney attack obviously coordinated between the Obama campaign and the Washington Post, the Post reaches back a half-century to Romney's mind and declare it homophobic.

9. Romney's More Secretive Than Nixon -- This one explains itself.

10. That's Racist --  This narrative is just starting to bubble up again. Chris Matthews was all over it last night and The New Yorker hit the theme that Romney's criticism of Obama dismantling welfare reform is racially based. And that's just the most recent example.

-----

There are very few people I know who want Barack Obama out of office more than my father, a working class retiree in the swing state of Wisconsin who, like most Americans, doesn't follow politics beyond the local news. But he cares about his country, he sees what Obama is doing to it, and he wants him out. And yet…

Yesterday, my dad and I talked a little bit about the election and he called Romney an "idiot." He didn’t call Romney a "rich, heartless asshole," he called him an "idiot" who can't seem to do anything right.

This is a problem.

To be clear, no one's saying the campaign is lost. Far from it. We have a LONG way to go and these are the dead days of August -- conventions, debates lie ahead -- and Romney has yet to start taking advantage of his pile of cash. But for right now, tactically, Obama's won the last six weeks, and in the process, widened his lead over Romney.

For right now, at least, Obama's audacious lies are winning.

of course, the media.

You mean like Fox News, Hannity, Limbaugh and Breitbart?

#1 is a case of out-sourcing, that nobody seems to realize that NOBODY in this fucking country will be working and available to afford their current standard level of living except for the 1%ers. Who probably won't live in this country anyway after it's gone to hell. And gee, if we had Obamacare at the time, that everybody seems to think is just such a shit way of doing health care (it may be, but it's pretty obvious that before Obamacare, it was even shittier it wouldn't have been an issue. Unfair? It's fucking war. We're still hearing birther shit.

#2 is certainly true. It's hard to make a company really competitive, but it's pretty damn easy to just ship the work off to where the work can be done for a fraction of what it costs here. Starting with Reagan, employees were no longer considered assets, they were now expenses. And doing it while enriching yourself over everybody else, yeah, that sounds like a libertarian plan to me.

#3 Again, how fucked up do you have to be, while bashing the exact same plan that you put in place in your own state for the feds, and then praising it in another fucking country! Romney is a fucking embarrassment. And then flip-flops when he gets back to the US. See #7. And it's a problem for Romney, one of his major successes, and he can't dare mention it! The radicalized Republicans would disown him!

#4 This one's rather hard, Romney could release the specifics, but he hasn't. And the devil is always in the God damned details.

#5 All Romney has to do to shut Reid up is release his tax returns. He's released one. And even that one isn't complete. If the simple fuck didn't want to be scrutinized, he didn't have to run for President. The person that started the whole thing about releasing tax returns? His father!

And by screaming about Reid, it's the Streisand effect. I suspect that the real issue with his tax returns has nothing to do with his taxes at all (as far as being technically legal, but I suspect that how he reduced his taxes and by how much will be eyebrow raisers...), but more to do with a lack of actually tithing what he supposedly should have tithed to the Mormon church. Remember, Reid is a Mormon too.

#6 is a rumor, that I've only heard from one news source once. Hardly sucking the wind out of anything.

#7 Who the hell knows? It seems that he has said both things, he supports abortion for rape and incest, and he would abolish abortion for rape and incest.

#8, 9 and 10, I haven't even heard.

Although the part about welfare reform is also a crock of shit coming from Romney.

So one network, a blog, two magazines and AM radio are the counterbalance to ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, New York Times, Washington Post, Boston Globe, Huffington Post, Air America, John Stewart, HBO, PBS, National Public Radio, AP, Reuters, USA Today, LA Times, Chicago Tribune, Time, Newsweek, New Yorker, The Atlantic, Boston Magazine, and CNBC?

No... #1 is a case of lying.

1: Romney stopped his day-to-day oversight at Bain Capital in 1999, GST Steel was closed in 2001. Even if he was running the company GST Steel was on the verge of closure when Bain took them over. If anything Bain extended the life of the company six years by dumping $100,000,000 into the company... but let's not get too stuck up on the trivial.

2: According to Mr. Soptic, his wife received her primary insurance through her employer – a local thrift store called Savers – and retained it even after his layoff. Soptic's policy through GST Steel was her secondary coverage. So... she had medical coverage at least until 2002 when she injured a rotator cuff and left her job, something Romney and Bain had nothing at all to do with!

3: So what was Mr. Soptic doing for work? He took a new job as a janitor did not provide coverage for his spouse making $25,000/year... which would have made him eligible for Medicare during that time. Now I understand American Pride and not wanting a handout, but in the situation where the only work you can find doesn't pay the bills and your wife is out of work due to an injury, you do the responsible thing and make sure the family's needs are met... and as a faithful Democrat that's what you've been voting for isn't it?

4: Oh yeah while were on the topic... he's an Obama supporter who appeared in another political ad released by the Obama campaign back in May. "That is the way I feel," Soptic told me over the phone. "Mitt Romney is a very rich man. I mean, it is obvious if you watch him on television he is completely out of touch with the average family, you know middle income people. I don’t think he has any concept as to how when you close a big company how [it] affects families, the community – you know, it affects everyone."

5: Ok, back to his poor wife. It was a few years later, in 2006, that Ilyona Soptic went to the hospital with symptoms of pneumonia. She was diagnosed with stage four cancer and passed away just days later. Though there are a long chain of decisions, from not signing up for Medicaid to staying at a sub-par job for five years instead of making efforts to retrain in a field that would have provided insurance, this is a tragic time for Joe. I can understand his bitterness and his need to place blame on anyone but his wife or himself, that is a common tactic used by the grieving, but six years later he is being dragged out by Obama cronies to tell how Romney somehow killed his wife.

That's just #1, would you like me to go through all of these bytehead?

Can you give me one other President that has had to present his birth certificate? Do you have any precedent, legal or not, for anybody to demand a President's birth certificate? Just how Goddamned fucking simple are you? Especially since Obama has released his birth certificate! There is no documentation that Obama could have presented that would have satisfied the birthers!

Presidential candidates have been doing this since Motherfucking Nixon!!

Obviously discussing politics here is impossible. It's a goddamned fucking echo chamber.

Slightly sidetracking the thread, but what do you figure is the reason for this (forgive the wording, but I don't follow political news from the US that closely) allegedly imbalanced media? Why isn't the market voting with their wallets/remotes for more fair news?
Assuming media consumers politically are evenly distributed, there should be no shortage of viewers/readers on either side. Do Fox News, Hannity, Limbaugh and Breitbart typically have a significantly larger audience than the left leaning sources mentioned?

The parallel is this: Obama resisted releasing his birth certificate for a while because to cater to credulous charges was not in his best interest. No president had been asked for one just as no presidential candidate has been accused of not paying taxes for ten years, nor have any released twenty years of tax returns, but once he does release them, every effort will be made to find every possible item that can be used against Romney whether legal or not, and we've already seen there willingness to make shit up out of whole cloth when they can't find anything else.

BTW, the same exact argument "All Romney has to do to shut Reid up is release his tax returns." was the same one used by those demanding Obama's Birth Certificate... has that issue gone away?

The reason is that most of those in power of the media now lived through the 60's and 70's, the eras of Kennedy and Nixon. They saw how media can change the world and have been using and abusing that power since.

As for 'voting with there remotes', people do... which is why FOX News is far ahead of all the other Cable News Networks (Yesterday for example, FOX News received a 1,124 rating vs. 937 for CNN, MSNBC and CNBC combined).

The reason networks survive though is not due to viewers, it's due to advertisers. If companies, corporations, and political groups are willing to pay to advertize on CNBC despite their bottomed out ratings... they will continue to exist. Also, most news networks exist as a division of a parent company so when you watch advertizements on Family Guy you are propping up FOX News and when you watch NCIS you help support MSNBC (ironic, isn't it!).

Quote by Edorph:

Their isn't, though because liberal media outlets outnumber conservative ones they have to share more of the liberal side of the pie. Also, there is a distinct difference between preferred methods of consumption. Liberals seem to prefer print, Network TV and Internet (which accounts for higher Today Show ratings than MSNBC ratings, the number of strong print newspapers and liberal magazines, and success of sites such as Politico and Huffington Post) While Conservatives seem to prefer radio, cable news, and the internet (This explains the dominance of conservatives on talk radio, FOX News, Breitbart and Drudge).

Then there comes the rub. As much as people on the left ridicule FOX for being 'fair and balanced' (and they should), they present the rest of the media as unbiased. This distortion in coverage affects opinions of voters that don't care to find out the facts of an issue or candidate or issue before voting. Not too many of those exist in this community (both sides tend to be very educated, even if they don't agree) but I'm sure we all know people who vote every year for the same party and have no knowledge of candidates outside what Peter Jennings says on the 6:00 news. It's these people the mainstream targets in an effort to skew public opinion (or in the case of life-long Republicans, getting them disenfranchised enough to sit out the election).

I have more respect for those that just come out and admit their bias, for example I would rather watch John Stewart than O'Reilly because Stewart actually comes out and says he supports the Democrats while O'Reilly tries to pass himself off as neutral... and yet Stewart has had more criticism for Democrats over the years than O'Reilly has had for Republicans. Plus, you don't have to be nasty or condescending to get your point across which pretty much keeps me away from FOX News entirely.
