Question about Heaven & Hell

A question for any believers in the supernatural who think that there is a "Heaven" and "Hell" after you die. It doesn't matter what religion you've chosen, so long as there's a good place and bad place after death for your kind.

I was wondering what happens when you make it to your "Heaven", but a loved one ends up in "Hell". It seems like that would spoil Heaven for you, but how can that be? Isn't Heaven supposed to perfectly awesome? And if by some god-magic it doesn't bother you that a loved one is in Hell, are you really yourself anymore? Can you really say you still have your own thoughts and feelings? Aren't you just programmed to feel good by your god or gods?

I guess some people could say that you'd be cool with your mother or daughter in Hell because you have perfect understanding of some divine plan now or something, but that seems like a cop out.

What am I missing?

Yeah yeah I am aware, but they don't show a lot of Good will now do they! Great point either way!

You can see it in the way our government shuns Muslim fundamentalists because they are "crazy radicals"

Well to be fair, if I was found to be what I am in a fundamentalist Muslim country I would be killed. Say what you will about the 'burning times' but at least Christianity has evolved somewhat in the last five hundred years.

And as TCM said, it is almost impossible to get elected to office in this country unless you profess you are a Christian. So unfortunately, someone who does not agree with this belief system is still bombarded with it in this country. In a perfect world, religion would never even be a part of the decision making process of an elected official. They would keep that in their personal lives. But they don't, they ooze it all over their policy support and campaigns. But then they turn around and become the self-serving, greedy individuals we have come to expect from our politicians.

Correct. How my religion would be perceived is one of reasons I will not run for public office (another is I am just not that good of a liar). That being said, if you vote for a devout Catholic you should not expect him to be pro-life, to vote for condoms distribution in schools, or to visit the local strip club. As a voter I would rather know what influences my politicians so I know how they will vote, and if I agree or disagree with that platform (whether I agree or disagree with that religion) I can maker a decision whether or not to support that candidate. Obviously a Catholic politician will do well in predominantly Catholic communities... and since he is a representative of the people, the system works as intended. If 90% of people in Bibethumper county want to elect a holy roller that believes all non-Bibethumpers will burn in the everlasting fires of hell... well, they do have the same rights in the country as anyone else and should be allowed to elect someone who shares their views.

I don't tend to care that much about the religion of politicians unless their beliefs or actions demand they infringe upon 'non-believers'... then it becomes a significant issue. I don't care if Romney's a Mormon. I really wouldn't care if Obama's a Muslim, or an atheist, or a Jew. It's their actions and policies I support or denounce not to whom (or if) they pray.

If I were a Christian, I would be up in arms about most of the politicians that also claim to be. But no, America just accepts their actions because they are good, Christian boys and girls. And then they live their lives like that thinking they are also good Christians from the example that is set by the majority of "Christians" in this country.

I have only met three or four real Christians in my life. Those that understand and try to live and understand the lessons and laws of the Bible. I would peg about 99% of Christians as Bible-thumpers, people who have serious misconceptions of what the book actually says about how they should live their life. Sure, they can quote most of the 'red' words (not in any particular order), they have Genesis, Exodus and Revelations down pat, and know all about not suffering a witch, but really have no desire to learn or do anything (heaven forbid!) that is going to inconvenience their lives. The most 'pious' among them use their Churches to gain power and prestige over others, they use their Bible as a weapon against those that cross them, and they use their religion as a sort of Diner's card... kept in reserve until it grants them the most benefit, then waved in all the right faces.

This is unfortunate, and as prevalent as the Bible Thumpers are, imagine how much more annoying they are to the real adherents! (I'm sure they feel like I do when I see some emo-chick all in black, with fifteen pentagrams telling meat eaters that she is going to put a curse on them ).

All I'm saying is don't throw them all in the same pot, and (this is directed more for TCM) try to be bit nicer to the ones that are not tramping all over this site claiming you are going to hell unless you are Saved (give me a Halleluiah!), and if you ask a question directed at them... by the Gods, don't be an asshat, there are few enough decent Christians already, no sense driving them off.

so... how would I feel if I ended up in heaven and, say my Sister was in hell? (presuming there is a hell blah blah blah)

If there was a heaven, then the guy who made it must be pretty much in charge of shit, and if he decided that my sister wasn't worthy enough to be there then who would I be to even question that?

I'd accept it as they way it has to be.

I am very nice to the Christians I know. I am not nice to Christianity.

I do get excited sometimes about, not just Christianity, but religion in general. Sometimes I can come off as an "asshat" to those who share their religious beliefs here, but I do not mean to disrespect them. I even tried to make that clear with a post I made especially for Viscera. I'm not sure if he even ever saw it, but I hope he did because I meant it. So in case you keep reading over this thread and didn't see it before Viscera...

Heaven is like the Matrix. From your prospective your loved ones will be there. Their perspective will be different of course but you will still be around your loved ones.
This also means that that brother-in-law you couldn't stand may make it to heaven but he won't be there from your perspective.

And while you're at it, this could also mean that Marisa Tomei will be my wife
