...For Great Justice!

Some foolish group of folks decided to rob my parents house today. They took the desktop PC, guns, and a fire safe with a ton of important paperwork inside of it.

Only problem? I know when they did it. I had logmein on the unit. So they took it at 7:38p Central time. It's now 8:36p central time, so I don't expect this thing to show up anywhere between now and then.

I can gain access unless they wipe & reload. These fellas just don't seem that smart.

Is there any software I can install to fix em up remotely and perhaps track/catch/report them as soon as they go online to use it.....assuming they get back online between now and the time they compromise my remote access?

points to all!

Thanks in advance.

I want these bastards to pay dearly. We've never been robbed prior. I'm 1800 miles away and even I feel violated.

The IP will give the ISP, and the ISP can provide the address to the police. Bingo. You should call the cops and ask them what you should do next. I think they may be interested, as it gives them a real chance to nail the bastards. Good luck!

You could at least get it to record and send IP addresses it connects from. Not sure what the laws are but you could possibly send them to the police to contact the relevant ISP to get the account owner.

The best thing to do is make sure anything confidential is deleted, if they have a half a brain though this thing will be whiped before they ever connect it to the internet.

logmein reports the last IP connected with, so that's automatic for sure.

Sorry to hear it, The4thnobleman. Griffin's advice is your best bet. Of course if they keep using the machine without wiping it, you can snap up all kinds of information. I think the first thing I'd do if I got access to my stolen computer would be to install a keylogger (e.g. pykeylogger.sourceforge.net). There's probably more specialized software for this out there too.

Keep your spirits up and take good care of your parents! Remember that the pitiful opportunistic burglar is probably a poor, drug addicted, wretchedly unhappy fool, whose miserable existence is likely already beyond the punishment you'd wish for most thieves. (Not sure what my point is, I just find that this mindset appeases my lust for vengeance somewhat).

This got me thinking about DIY theft/recovery thingies for desktops. One could probably make a pretty devious one with the Raspberry Pi and a GPS dongle, inconspicuously mounted in the case. Perhaps GSM dongle too. Hmmz. Actually, a cheap phone, duct-taped somewhere clever would maybe work too. It'd get power from the desktop itself (or in the case of a phone, be charged). Ideally, it would be able to monitor the desktop machine's activity, at least log keystrokes.

Now that I think about it, just having USB GPS & GSM dongles attached at all times (ideally mounted hidden internally in the case, but obviously with reception) would kick ass. The software would be lost when they wipe the disk of course, but I bet in the majority of cases, the box is booted at least once. *heads off to dealextreme*

I think I like this cell phone idea. A prepaid deal with expiring minutes means I could track it.....perhaps the USB GPS transmitter...could get one from Dealextreme. Won't do jack for me at the moment, but I could easily set something up like that and mount the device in a hard drive bay, in a manner which would require security bits to access. Works for mine.
