I have no stinking title, leave me alone.

Need a new book to read. I don't like fantasy or Sci Fi unless it is very realistic and explosive and I don't mean like Star Trek or Star Wars.

I don't like romance unless their is an actual interesting plot that may result in a romance, I don't like paranormal stuff like Twilight though I did read them and enjoy the movies with the kids every once in a while.

Human dramas are ok, as long as they are based on some sort of reality not pitiful books. I enjoy war books, historical books, and historical fiction. Oh yes, I enjoy a thriller, mystery but not gory mystery like Jason or Freddy. I enjoy detective or plot solving books.

What is the best book you ever read and why?

Go...

I really liked the Steig Larson trilogy ("Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" etc.)

It starts kinda slow, but about half way through you can't put it down.

I wouldn't presume to say it's the best, but my favorite is Tolkien's Silmarillion.

As for why, there are many reasons: it is amazingly internally consistent and connected, incomplete even as it was; the way the tone shifts from the distant to the near as the story moves from the cosmic to the personal; the mingling of joy and sadness, hope and despair; the beautiful moments of loyalty and courage; the way personal trials are played out against the fate of whole peoples. I could go on.

I have just started reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Reasons: I just find his story-telling style the most absorbing and i like the idea that some people still believe in the Elixir of Life!

I read that about ten years ago, and indeed the book is fantastic. Paulo Coelho can write in a way that helps you travel in time and see things that your eyes have never seen, he elicits emotions and excitement from his writings that I have not experienced in other authors. Enjoy, it is great reading. He has many books out that are fantastic.

I started reading Game of Thrones in 2007 and it wasn't until 2011 that the 5th book of the series came out. I waiting 4years for the 5th part checking almost every month if GRRM has gotten around to completing it. It was exasperating. But I have really enjoyed the whole series upto now. HBO is sticking close to the book which is pretty impressive and it doesn't disappoint. Pretty good, all in all.

Cool, a sticky thread! Thanks peeps!

I read a series, it is an old series but yet I think it is really cool, it has history, mysticism, religion, science and it is really well written.

Thirst by Christopher Pike, he has many books in that series. Right now there are four books out, though total together there are about nine, each contains two to three books. Sita is a kick as* bi**ch, she is tough, and pretty smart and cool for a girl and a great character in the books. The lines between good and evil tend to blur and sometimes you end up cheering for the bad guys (weird), this guy must have done extensive research into religion and science and all the mystic because this is not something someone just invents. It is violent and gory so if you like somewhat fast paced, with lots of great action scenes these are great. His actual name is Kevin McFadden but pens under Christopher Pike.

I haven't read that much books, but I might recommend you "Lavared's five cents" by Paul d’Ivoi, a French author. I read the book as a kid, it's a tale about a bet in circumnavigating the world without spending more than five cents in total. Yes, it is pretty similar to Jules Verne's "A trip aroung the world in eighty days"....

Did you know that Christopher Pike was the name of the original captain of the Starship Enterprise. He was played by Jeffrey Hunter.I wonder if Mr. McFadden was a fan of Star Trek or Jeffery Hunter and picked his nom de plume accordingly.

Did not know that but his affinity for the technological, supernatural, futuristic could be a clue to that. Now I will look it up.

He sure did! You got that right GH! Just looked it up and he took the name from ST
