...With Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Lana Wachowski

Get ready to re-enter the Matrix.

Lana Wachowski is set to write and direct a fourth film set in the world of “The Matrix,” with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and globally distribute the film. Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich made the announcement on Tuesday.

“We could not be more excited to be re-entering ‘The Matrix’ with Lana,” said Emmerich. “Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.”

In addition to Wachowski, the script was also written by Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. Wachowski is also producing with Grant Hill. Sources say the film is eyed to begin production at the top of 2020.

Warner Bros. has been trying for the last of couple years to find a way to get back into “The Matrix” universe, but a hold-up over producing rights slowed the project down. Over the past couple of months, the studio saw an opportunity to ramp up development, with Reeves boasting a strong summer that included box office hits “John Wick 3” and “Toy Story 4” and a script from Wachowski that drummed up excitement.

Plot details are currently unknown, as is how the role of Morbius will be handled, originally played by Laurence Fishburne. Some sources say the role may be recast for a younger take.

The three previous films —“The Matrix,” “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions” — have collectively earned more than $1.6 billion at the global box office. All three were written and directed by Lana and her sister, Lilly, and starred Reeves and Moss.

“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends,” Wachowski said.

The first “Matrix” had its 20th anniversary this year, marked by special screenings at select AMC locations starting on Aug. 30.

Didn't Neo die?

Never said anything specific about that

Wait, it's only one of the Wachowski 'sisters'? That's setting off alarm bells.

edit: Not that if was both of 'em it would necessarily be good. Them both together have already shown they can be huge fuck-ups.

There was a point in my younger life where she and I could be twins. anyway excited for a new movie. Remember Neo is like “Jesus” so it is entirely possible for the matrix to bring him back.

But nothing in the last movie said he died. It looked that way but it was left open

It's not like they can set the movie between any of the first 3

As long as the don't inject the current progressive trend into the characters, I can't see they can go wrong tbh i'm not too hopeful though.

Trinity definitely died, physically at least. There was no way to have her as part of the story in the machine city, so she was killed off when they arrived in the last movie. It's possible the machines uploaded her mind, or have a copy of it saved, which goes with my second theory below.

Neo did not die. Sati asked the Oracle if they would ever see Neo again and the Orcale replied that she believed they would. Now, his physical form may have been overcome, but his mind was intertwined with the Machines, and the Oracle at the time that Smith overwrote him. Once granted access to Smith through Neo's mind, the machines deleted Smith. So my guess would be that Neo may return as just his code self, with no physical form in the human world. Kind of like when he was overcome at the end of the 2nd movie, and left his body and entered the Matrix without jacking in. Also, the Oracle was part of the Neo, Smith, Machine deletion, so she would probably know if it killed Neo. And the Oracle is the counter-part to the Architect, and he would have known if Neo were killed but didn't even mention him.

Another option is that Zion and the Machine City, are actually upper level parts of the Matrix, and the people that were "awakened" from the Matrix into Zion, were actually just moved from the Matrix program to the Zion program. This would satisfy their need to escape the Matrix, and give them focus on something to keep fighting for once outside. It would also make the whole conversation that Neo has in the second movie with the Architect make way more sense, as he refers to anomalies (people awakened) being rounded off (moving to the Zion program) and the "One" being a prime code that is used to reset the whole process. And it would explain why Neo could destroy machines in the "real world". But since Neo did not return to the source due to his love for Trinity, neither program was rebooted. Also, the Smith program was not present in the previous versions of the Matrix, so dealing with that was an unanticipated necessity for the Machines. Now that Smith has been deleted, the Matrix and Zion were not reset by the One returning to the source, and Zion was not destroyed to force a restart of the process, we may see a completely new level to the Matrix that did not exist in the previous movies.
