In most cultures, kids tag along with grownups or mooch with friends but American life is heavy with ‘kid-friendly’ artifice

My 9 year old cooked supper tonight, alone. I don't coddle my kids, I try to train them with the skills they will need when they are drop-kicked out the front door as young adults.

My kids cooked, cleaned and were even allowed to play outside without supervision, it was great for them
Too many of their friends were utterly useless till it was too late

This is a battle with my wife and I. She wants everything supervised. By 6-7 years old, I woke up, ate breakfast, was out until lunch, then back out until dinner. Could have been 2 hours from.the house by bike.

do that. More independence and responsibility I give my kids (biological and Scouting) the more they show.
