I've worked on top of tanks and derricks in the oilfield and hanging over live sewers for years, but even I'd have to second guess going on that job, especially with no real tie-off.

Fuck that for a joke. Also, decent safety lines would super easy to fit to that, and take about as much time as they spent. They're just retarded.
How fit is that guy? How long does it take him to go all the way up from the base? I will need to take 3 days. One day to get up, one up top to rest, and another one to go down....
I remember watching the TV show "That's Incredible" when I was a kid, and one of the segments was about a man who would climb up the antenna of the Empire State Building for maintenance and repair. It is perhaps the ballsiest job in the world. To this day people still have to go up there.
at least those guys have safety lines, and could use the metal framing to secure safety latches as well. That I could handle. But, doing a free climb, while carrying a 30lb tool bag, and 2 brass balls between your legs...hell no.
