And that had to hurt back in the day I was a pipefiter and got a piece of Ductal Iron in my eye and they had to numb my eye to get the metal out and put the needle in the corner to numb my eye it was so painful.

I suspect there's more than a little bit of an attempt to look somewhat more intimidating. Prisoners usually display more than a little bit more of predator/prey instinct while incarcerated.
